--I found this letter inside my inbox when I woke up this morning.  One of the most encouraging statements of belief I've ever received from anyone I know.  I'm not ToTallY misunderstood, now, am I?--

Hey D,

I read your blog this morning and it's shocking to read about your Dr's.
It's amazing how our nation has the nerve to "make the world" a better place
and doesn't even take care of it's own population.

I hope your depression doesn't take over again. Daryl, you are a unique
person and that comes with a lot of invisible responsibility, uncommon
reward, and over the top human emotion. You are so FORTUNATE to be in the
position you are because you have the ability to go anywhere in the world
and write and photograph anything you want.  You have taken the time to
understand spirituality and beauty and that leads to uncommon wisdom not
everyone can understand in the here and now, but maybe in the future another
generation will. What's important is that you do the creative work now. I
wouldn't be bothered passed a particular point if you feel misunderstood,
look at the people who don't understand you.

I'm not saying you have to be happy, because I think it's more about being
peaceful. If you feel you are in a shell, and want out, break out. Work with
what you have and start doing something different. Attend poetry reading in
SF. Commit to only wearing yellow on Tuesdays if you want. If people aren't
going to understand you, then give them something they really can't
understand. There is disappointment trying to overcome disappointment, don't
let disappontment stop you from living your life or let disappointment beat
you down.  Dissapointments have a way of becoming regrets. Life is short and
regrets show their real pain at death.  I know you're into music, :) and I
think the Rolling Stones really got it right when they said, you don't
always get what you want, but if you look real hard, you'll find you get
what you need. Be  Strong and Brave! Wear yellow! :) Go out and look for
that card catalog for all your self portraits. Maybe you've grown past being
a student and you're more of a teacher now. Maybe your classroom is the
world. What are you going to show us?
