i stood outside in the 40 degree chill early this morning waiting for the NASA Stardust capsule to reenter the earths atmosphere. i went across the street and set my camera and tripod up in the basketball court of Twin Creeks School and faced north. the ETA of the capsule's reentry was 2AM PST. i was on my cell phone with a friend that was stationed at the nasa.gov website so that they could give me up to the minute details of the progress of the fiery orb. i could have been much better prepared. here is what happened. 5 minutes after the capsule was supposed to reenter the atmosphere i deduced that i missed the siting entirely. i saw nothing in the huge northwestern-ish sky that my vision and camera was focused upon. around 1:55AM while i was chatting with my own personal mission control i noticed movement above a large walnut tree that skirted the field i was standing near. at first, lost in conversation it did not strike me as anything unusual at all but as my eyes sett...

Jan 3, 2006 ( Seaweeds Droppings ) BEND OVER, THE STONES ARE COMING According to our friends at Pollstar, The Rolling Stones had the highest grossing tour in North America in 2005, but they didn't have the highest average ticket price. That dubious distinction went to Barry Manilow who had the balls to charge $153.93 for the privelege of hearing him sing Mandy and reminisce about the good old days with Bette Midler. And everybody's favorite Canadian canary, Celine Dion, didn't even go out on tour in '05, yet she ended up at #3 on the list. Cadaverous Celine just showed up at Caesars Palace in Vegas every night and the audience came to her....at an average ticket price of $136.04. The Stones averaged $133.98 while Paul McCartney (#4 on the list) held up his fans for $135.46 per seat. Hey, nobody's holding a gun to your head. They charge that much because you'll pay that much. Green Day tickets averaged almost a hundred dollars less that the Stones in 2005, but th...

WHAT COUNTS MOST – AND IT AIN’T TALENT The Zen of Novel Writing – by James N. Frey We are all something else besideds novelists, but if you are not a novelist in your heart, at your core, you are a dilettante and should not bother trying to be a novelist. Being a novelist is not just a matter of reading a book of technique and fiddling around at your typewriter putting little blotches of ink on paper. If you were to list the qualities a person needs to become a novelist, what would you put first? A college education? Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, and Daniel Defoe never attended college. Neither did many modern writers of note: Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Dashiell Hammett, Ambrose Bierce, and Willa Cather, to name just a few. What about talent? If you attend writers’ conferences and writing workshops around the country, you will soon see that there is no shortage of talent in America. Mo...
