money is the source of all misery/delight...

know how much money i've made so far this year? money i've actually earned for providing a service of my hours and energies in exchange for payment?

$52

that was for sitting watching two dogs for a woman who had to go away on an overnight business trip. i had to be at her house at 5:30 am on a Tuesday and got off work at 5:30 pm the next day.

i was allowed 3 hours each day off for my own enjoyment/needs away from the pipsqueaks. luckily i was able to leech a wifi connection off the neighbors unsecured internet connection and i was able to work on my photography and writing from her house.

the job was in Livermore, California, about 30 miles from where I sleep every other night. i get very disoriented when i stay in other peoples houses. i can't get comfortable in the beds they tell me to sleep in. i usually end up sleeping on the couch with the tv blaring so i won't fall completely asleep and then wake up wondering where the hell i am. when i go out for my meals in the evening i usually get a horrible, desperate feeling of dislocation and separateness because of the unfamiliar settings and seeing even stranger unknown people around me. plus, the night this job i went out to eat it was raining. rain always makes the loneliness bite harder.

well, this story gets worse. the night she gave me the check for my payment it was too late to go to the bank. i wanted to get the check cashed so i could go to Rasputin's to buy some used record covers of Adrian Belew music to take to the concert for him to sign. and i wanted to buy a .99 cent chicken sandwich at Wendy's.

the bankers told me that they couldn't cash my check because my account was over drawn and that i had to go to Washington Mutual to cash it. but it was my own bank! i would have had them just deposit it to cover the over draft but they confused me. and i wasn't going to drive out of my way to go to stupid WM. they over complicate cashing a check for cash, requiring multiple ids and a finger print.

so i go home.

and didn't remember to deposit the check till 5 days later. when i find out that my overdraft of only $9 has turned into a late fee monster of $88!!!

so when i go to the bank the next day to deposit the $52 i earned it doesn't even begin to sate the late fee monsters hunger. luckily i figured out how to manage the bank's phone system and got a live person to talk to who gave me a little salvation by telling me that for another fee i could get an advance on my upcoming social security benefits direct deposit. which would subtract money from my measly funds to get by with in the next month.

but at least it would stop the overdraft monster from continuing to gouge at my flesh. in essence, i ended up paying over $100 for the privilege of spending 36 hours in a stranger's house, with strange dogs in a strange city. some people call that vacation i think.
