Happy Birthday James Hetfield!

METALLICA front man, James Hetfield The image “http://i.rollingstone.com/assets/rs/8/227/images/00325826_lg.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.celebrated his 44th birthday yesterday. Some of you know that I am a recent convert to the music of Metallica and Heavy Metal. I've only been listening to it for a short number of years now. I only became able to appreciate and gather some sort of understanding of it's meaning and energy because of the condition of the state of my soul.

I think that Metallica's music was born of a vision as a means to channel the energy of a world in pain, and also anger. Does listening to Metallica and Heavy Metal generate more pain and anger? I think that depends on the clarity of the channel the music is being played through, or listened in. What I mean by that is that music is a vibration and that the person that listens to music vibrates according to the quality of the sound. A person that is full of unchanneled pain and anger can find resonance in this music. If a person's mind is open to ideas of growth and release, the music can work for them as a means to dispel and unleash old emotions. Many people that are fans of Heavy Metal take on the identity of the imagery. I did this, dressing in black and even dyeing my hair black for a couple of years. But to spend my life mired in that persona? I don't know... I don't think so.

I'll always be able to listen to a little bit of metal a day, but my musical interests are all over the board, as you could see by watching my Last.Fm playlist. Regardless, James Hetfield has gone through his own process of change, growth, and release - which you can witness by watching the remarkable film, Some Kind of Monster. Many original Metallica fans accuse the band of selling out and compromising their sound. My being a recent fan of their music actually love their latest album, St. Anger the most. I am really looking forward to their new album that will come out next year.
