The Game

My library is pretty cool sometimes. Now that I no longer work there as a volunteer and get to pore over the stacks with scrutiny like I did last summer - some days coming home with a dozen books that I wouldn't have easily found otherwise, my new hang out is the "new books" shelf. New "new books" are added to this section every single week, and there are really some amazing books. I don't understand completely what the procedure is for obtaining new books, although there is a form on the website where the public can make suggestions about books that they would like the library to obtain. I use this form a lot, suggesting 3-5 new books that I am interested in reading, that I also think would be good for the rest of the public to have access to, a month.

Funny though that the Contra Costa County Library has a pronouncedly different perspective on worthy new titles than the Alameda County Library does. I'm testing now to see if there is some sort of prejudice involved in CC County. A recent book that I found that I want to read, God is not Great; How Religion Ruins Everything, by Christopher Hitchens;  there are seven copies of it in Alameda County yet not one copy in Contra Costa County. I am number 58 in the holds list in Alameda County. I requested purchase of this book and I will let you know if I ever see a new copy appear on the Contra Costa County new book shelf.
Now, the point of this posting is to tell you about a surprisingly amazing new book that I have just found on the "new book" shelf. The title actually made me pass it by the first time my eyes scanned the shelf. I sort of giggled nervously, thought, "I'll check it out another time." Then thought, "Hell, what do I have to be embarrassed about!" and grabbed it. It was not until I started to read it tonight that it hit me what an ultimately life changing read this will be.

The book is called "THE GAME; Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, by Neil Strauss"

"Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an
underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most
devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This
is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses
known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two
years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his
real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and
controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of
men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever. On
his journey from AFC (average frustrated chump) to PUA (pick-up artist)
to PUG (pick-up guru), Strauss not only shares scores of original
seduction techniques but also has unforgettable encounters with the
likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Heidi Fleiss, and
Courtney Love. And then things really start to get strange -- and
passions lead to betrayals lead to violence. The Game is the story of
one man's transformation from frog to prince -- to prisoner in the most
unforgettable book of the year."

Now you tell me, do you know someone that could benefit from this book? Any regular reader of this blog is probably snickering, "You go, Darko!"

Oh, and the Alameda County Library does not have a copy of this book right now!
