evidence of where i was... (photo of DEAD ON THE WATER)
Ok, now here is the long story. Alan and I are very long time Captain Beefheart fans. When I recently discovered that short-term Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas (he played on Safe As Milk) was going to be playing in L.A. I suggested to Alan that we go catch that show. I have been bugging Alan to come to a concert with me for over two years now and timing has just never worked out, seeing he has a job and lives 500 miles away and all. So this sounded like the perfect show to see, and it would be suiting for me to finally visit Alan in the desert. I have never visited him in all of the 22+ years he has lived in the So Cal desert.
So, Thursday afternoon I arrive in L.A. and Alan informs me that Gary Lucas cancelled his show because there was not enough tickets sold. (I wrote a letter to Gary at his MySpace page and told him that we were disappointed to not get to see him.) He was kind enough to write me back. I still need to answer that letter to let him know I had no bad intentions in my first note.
This left Alan and I with a need to find alternate entertainment for Friday night. We got the local entertainment paper and started to look for familiar and/or interesting bands to go see. There were two classic performers playing next month (Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, seperate concerts) that I misread the dates on and we got all excited. But no, the best old time band playing this weekend was Blue Oyster Cult and that didn't really get us that revved up.
We saw one place in Silver Lake district where some seemingly girl punk rock bands were going to play but when we went to their MySpace pages and sampled their sounds it was more like trip-hop than punk and we axed that option. What we did find that sounded good from the samples we heard were three bands playing ON THE ROXY, a little bar atop the classic ROXY THEATER on Sunset Blvd.
When Alan and I arrived at The Roxy there was a crowd in front of the place, flood lights, a red carpet and a throng of reporters and people with video/television cameras. It looked like "hoopla" but it was sort of calm. I edged right into the fray and stuck my phonecam into the mix and snapped the shot displayed below of the guy with the "blue hair". I had to ask who he was because I had never seen his face before. His name is Perez Hilton and apparantly is some sort of celebrity blogger? I still don't really know. What I do know now after reading his blog is that while Alan and I were upstairs rocking out with BANDCAMP, MARGATE, and DEAD ON THE WATER, the likes of Paris Hilton, Courtney Love, Dave Navarro, and others were downstairs partying with this dude Perez. Small world, eh?
