to warm up my fingers... i'm just going to tell a story (or two)

I'm not ready to break out my volumes of files and folders that contain all of my typewritten pages that make up my possibly great American novel, just yet. I'm going to need some warming up and ego building to give me confidence that I'm really ready to go back into that tempestuous struggle. So here's where my head is today.

Last week I had an experience with my best friend that led me to think that what we had just gone through was good material for a short story. I've never been a good short story writer, have never really had much impetus to write short stories. and also have not read a lot of short stories... wow, the odds are so against me being good at following this lead of an idea. But it's not like I'm really writing them for anyone other than myself. I'm not writing them for a class or any contests. I just want to try writing them to get my storytelling juices flowing again. And maybe by starting to write some so-called short stories, I might learn how to get better at them too.

The point in telling you about that was because I had a creative idea come up today, for a photography project, and I let it play out pretty far in my mind but I ended up pretty much talking myself into believing that it would never even get off the ground. As a result of all that mind game playing, I came up with good thought fodder for another short story idea! Write a story that tells the whole tale of failure that I saw in my mind. Let it happen short and quickly in a story like this and save me the personal drama of living it out in real life. I'd get all the pleasure from creating great drama and taking character's experiences to higher and lower extremes than I'd probably experience in my own real-life experience.

So yeah, that's kind of where my head is at today. I feel good with this.

Where I had been going with my efforts to get creative projects happening this past week, trying to find some models to photograph had been going nowhere. I'd enjoy working with other people, but I'd also enjoy the simplicity of just doing things by myself.
