the end is nigh...

well, it's here. i've made up my mind. i don't need Facebook to be happy. in fact, during the past two weeks that i've been in deactivation-mode, i've been happier than i've been in a long time. partly because i've stopped worrying about how happy/unhappy all those other people that populate my Facebook world are. no longer having the forefront of my brain cluttered with confusing and misleading statuses by attention-get'ers and woe-is-me-ers, i've been able to begin a bit of a detoxification process of finding myself again. and it's been nice. (oh and don't get me wrong, i'm by no means discounting the fact that i was indeed an attention get'er and a woe-is-me'er too. being free from there for two weeks has helped me realize that i don't have to declare to the world, or my "hood" what i'm thinking or how i'm feeling every single day and expect pats on the back or condolences. it's just not necessary in being able to function as a normal human being.

so i'm going to do it. the big unplug. the Facebook suicide. gonna delete the whole motha'. this is my 24 hour notice. if you see this and feel you may want to contact me about anything in the future, jot down my email address. it's there on my info page. don't write any comments on my "wall" because i'm not going to see it. just logging in long enough to post this link and then i'm outta here. oh, and i'm not replacing Facebook with Google Plus. G+ has just been a stepping stone in my process of coming to understand how social networking is not a replacement for personal networking. i will still use the internet for some things, but overall i'm going to be going through a dumbing down process. find my blogs and see what i'm doing in my life via them...

if you really want to be my friend, write me a letter. on paper. put it in an envelope and send it to me. i'll do the same for you. i'll even send you a "real" photograph back in return.

Hey Daryl,
Leaving FB is ok. I can take it or leave it. if it disappeared I would not miss it.
I will try and keep up with your blog. I still have the Blurb credit to use and select one of your books. I have a post it note on my comp screen to do so. Life keeps me busy - you know what I mean. It is good to text you about baseball. not everyone likes baseball.
I read a recent Stephen King book calle Full Darkness, No Stars. It was vintage King, four long/short stories - not supernatural, just macarbe.

Your friend,
Thom

Hey Thom,

Leaving FB feels like having a bit of a clean start on life, ya know? New years resolution kinda thing. I think part of my main motivation is freeing up mental time to devote to more rewarding activities, like reading (and baseball!). I haven't heard of that Stephen King title. I grabbed a Nook (ebook reader) for my birthday and am plowing through a huge Clive Barker tome that's been too hard for me to tackle before (1100 pages). Feels good to get my mind back. And maybe now my hunger for contact with people will take me out of the cyber conversations I have and lead me into talking to flesh and blood people. It sure would be nice to sit across the table from a woman over coffee and just shoot the breeze... thanks for commenting buddy!
