the old man @ dvc experiment… day 2

yesterday was a lot easier than i expected it to be. for some reason, there don’t seem to be the maddening crowds of people here on campus that i was fearfully envisioning. at noon yesterday i pulled into the parking lot and immediately found a parking space. this morning, anticipating a flood of students vying for 8am class parking spaces i arrived here at 7:15, only the 9th or 10th car in the entire science building lot. by 8am the lot was virtually full, but then at 8:30 when i decided to wander onto campus towards my 9:30 classroom, i saw that the library parking lot had at least a dozen open parking spaces. this is not how things were in the past. not three years ago. not thirty years ago. maybe they have finally figured out some system for getting an even flow of student enrollment in classes that balances throughout the day. or maybe i just had some dumb luck.

i looked up one of my old professors here yesterday, Lenore Gallin, who was very influential in getting me inspired to study anthropology at UCSC. she still teaches here and i found her office. just have to find her at a time when she’s in her office. also going to try to find Jane Smithson, another anthropology professor. she is who influenced me to start writing again, AFTER UCSC. i really have a lot of things to tell her about.

my film professor yesterday is pretty good. he’s an old guy, probably in his early 60’s and has a lot of Hollywood savvy about him. funny, but he mainly referenced films from the 70’s yesterday in his lecture. i’m definitely the oldest student in the class, by a long shot. closest second runner is probably only about 30 yrs old. anyway, i spoke to the professor after class and told him that i already have the piece that i want to turn into a script written out in short story form. he asked to read it. i ran to the library and printed it off. he has it now.

so today is my short story lit class and poetry writing. nervous, mainly because i’m tired. slept not so bad last night, but this is way earlier than i am used to being up doing things. my normal morning routine is to wake up by 10am to see the Drew Carey extravaganza after a late night of photo editing. i was asleep by 10pm last night and out of bed at 6am this morning.

saw on twitter this morning that Francesca Lia Block is starting an online writing class Thursday this week. i sent her an email inquiry. she responded. i’m waiting for her to send me the course outline. in a second i’d trade what i’m enrolled in here at DVC for her class. stay tuned.
