some things about yesterday and today…

Image
  1. Santa Cruz;   My son Billy and I went to Santa Cruz yesterday. The first time that the two of us have been back there together in probably 5 years. It was a simple visit that lasted about 4 hours. We did not take the tour and visit all our old hang outs (Billy and I lived there for two years back in the mid 90’s when I attended the university), but got right down to business and went to Cafe Pergolesi for caffeine and chess. Cafe Pergolesi (with yellow car in front).   2. We then met up with my old college buddy Shannon for lunch at Charlie Hong Kong. It was Billy’s first time to eat there and he said he didn’t care for it that much. I got my usual; Red Phoenix Curry with the Green Chile Chicken topper. So amazingly soothing to my stomach and soul. During phases of my life in recent years when I’ve been healthier I’ve been known to drive the 150 mile round trip from San Ramon to Santa Cruz just for a quick dip in the ocean and dinner at Charlie’s. ...

3 things about today…

i’ve decided to make an effort to get back into the blogging game. it’s not that hard to do and it’s good discipline. healing for the mind and soul. so i’m going to keep it simple to start with and just talk about 3 things each day. maybe it will be three different things each day, but i’ll make three points. i tried this awhile ago but it fizzled a bit. 1. Photography; here is a photograph i shot today. It is of some of the books that are on my bed right now. i should read; The Doctor and The Devils and The Lost Weekend. not sure if  i will though. these are not books that i will keep on my bed tonight - well, except maybe for the Thomas and Jackson. oh, and i got all these books for .50cents each at a Goodwill store last week.  haha, and that Seinfeld book is an actual script of The Big Salad episode. 2. Music; not sure what made me do a search for Talking Heads tonight, but this is what i ended up looking at. i have never seen this before. never even knew there wa...

my tribute to Lez Zeppelin

Image
Due to the misfortune of my swollen ankles caused by high blood pressure and probably also because of all the freaking medications I swallow everyday I could not attend the Lez Zeppelin concert at Slim's in San Francisco tonight. Anyway, I just wanted to state that these girls put on one of the most luscious concerts anyone that loves the music of Led Zeppelin could ever experience. Catch them at least once in your short time on this planet if you can. They will get into your soul. And stay there. These are photographs that I took of them when they were last in San Francisco in 2007. This is the poster for the current tour.

rules to live by... this could change EVERYTHING

Captain Beefheart's 10 Commandments of Guitar Playing 1. Listen to the birds . That's where all the music comes from. Birds know everything about how it should sound and where that sound should come from. And watch hummingbirds. They fly really fast, but a lot of times they aren't going anywhere. 2. Your guitar is not really a guitar Your guitar is a divining rod . Use it to find spirits in the other world and bring them over. A guitar is also a fishing rod. If you're good, you'll land a big one. 3. Practice in front of a bush Wait until the moon is out, then go outside, eat a multi-grained bread and play your guitar to a bush. If the bush dosen't shake, eat another piece of bread. 4. Walk with the devil Old Delta blues players referred to guitar amplifiers as the "devil box." And they were right. You have to be an equal opportunity employer in terms of who you're bringing over from the other side. Electr...

favorite SF eatery... for the time being.

Image
I've eaten at this place twice. Well, I don't eat while I'm in SF all that often. If I do eat, I usually gravitate to Tommy's Joynt or the Burger King a few blocks down Van Ness after a late night concert. Last October though, I was in the city scoping out Mission Dolores for future Cemetery Girl photo shoots and found that I was extremely hungry and had not brought any sandwiches or snacks for myself. That was when I broke down and decided to spend some money for a sandwich at this place, a virtual hole in the wall, on 16th St. called Ike's Place . On one's first visit to Ike's they might have difficult choosing what to order. One thing that is easy about ordering is that they only serve sandwiches. But when you look at the felt marker, hand written menu on the wall where over 20 different sandwiches are described, well, I was overwhelmed. I just wanted to stand there and read what the makings of every sandwich were, and fantasized that if I were a neighbor...
